2004 CGA player of the year Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club fired 2 under final round 70 to win the 2005 CGA Mid-Amateur Championship which was contested this weekend at the Haymaker Golf Course in Steamboat Springs. Irwin who won the 2003 Mid-Amateur was the only player to finish under par with a total of 212 for the three day championship finishing seven strokes ahead of the next competitor. Second round leader Michael Harrington of Kissing Camels Golf Club finished alone in second place after carding a 78 in Sundays final round. Seven time Mid-Amateur champion and Colorado Golf Hall of Fame member Rick Dewitt of West Woods Golf Course finished in a tie for third with 2005 CGA Senior Stroke Play Champion Robert Polk of The Pinery Country Club at seven over par for the championship. Rounding out the top five was Jim Doidge of Pueblo Country Club and Matt Strong of Wellshire Golf Course both at 224. The original field of 84 players was cut to the low 40 players and ties for Sunday’s final round.
