Defending champion CU player Kane Webber of Sunset Golf Course fired a final round 68 to win his second consecutive CGA State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at River Valley Ranch Golf Club. Webber birdied three of the first five holes en route to a 33 on the front nine, then he played the back nine one-under par (35) to distance himself from the field and earn a convincing seven-stroke victory at 11-under par 277.
ThunderRidge High School student Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch Golf Club, who tied the course record with his second round 65, shot a final round 74 to finish in a tie for second at 284. This is the second time this year Tolan has finished runner-up to Webber in a CGA championship, as Tolan lost to Webber in a playoff for the title in the CGA Public Links Championship this June. Tied for second with Tolan at 284 was Jim Doidge of Pueblo Country Club, who fired his third 70 of the tournament in the final round. This was Doidge’s first CGA State Stroke Play Championship. Zen Brown of Lake Arbor Golf Club, a 16-year-old student at Pomona High School, fired his third consecutive 72 in the final round to take fourth place at 289. CSU player John Hayes of Columbine Country Club carded a 72 to finish tied for fifth at 290 with Mitch Perry of Sonnealp Golf Club.
