2002 Colorado Golf Hall of Fame inductee Rick DeWitt of West Woods Golf Club did it again. And again, and again…DeWitt came from behind at the difficult Rolling Hills Country Club to win his seventh CGA State Mid-Amateur Championship, and his fourth in a row. On the back nine, DeWitt trailed Steve Ivan of Hollydot Golf Course and Scott Radcliffe of Rolling Hills as all three were nip and tuck down the stretch. DeWitt birdied 15, pulling within striking distance, then drained a 25-foot birdie putt on 17 to share the lead with Radcliffe going into 18. Ivan was just one stroke back standing on the 18th tee, setting up a dramatic finish. Ivan reached the par-five 18th green in two, while DeWitt and Radcliffe set up short approach shots. DeWitt’s chip was near perfect, missing the hole by an inch and settling three feet from the hole and an extremely sloped and fast green. Radcliffe’s pitch shot hit high on the slope and slowly rolled back off the green. Ivan then missed his eagle putt and DeWitt made his third birdie in the final four holes to finish at 72 for a total of 218 to win the championship. Radcliffe and Ivan tied for second place at 220. Dean Clapp of Meadow Hills Golf Course fired the low round of the day, a 69 which featured a six-under par 30 on the back nine, to pull into fourth place at 222–two strokes ahead of the fifth place finisher, 1995 champion Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club.
DeWitt has now won this event seven times: in 1991, 1994, 1996 and 1999-2002.
