After being the runner-up in the Women’s ACC Championship as both a freshman and a sophomore, Coloradan Jennifer Kupcho wasn’t quite as good this year, but still managed a top-five finish on Monday.
Kupcho (pictured), the Wake Forest junior who will represent the U.S. in both the Arnold Palmer Cup and the Curtis Cup later this year, tied for fifth Monday in the ACC meet, held in Greensboro, N.C.
She carded rounds of 72-70-74 for an even-par total of 216 at Grandover Resort. That left her six strokes behind individual champion Leona Maguire of Duke, the No. 2-ranked women’s amateur in the world, who claimed her third ACC individual title.
Kupcho, currently No. 3 in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings and No. 8 among women’s college players by Golfweek, now has recorded five top-six finishes this college season. That includes two individual victories.
Next up for Kupcho will be the NCAA Regionals, where she claimed an individual title last year.
Elsewhere in Conference Championships: The University of Colorado men led for much of the first round and finished the 36-hole first day in third place Monday in the Pac-12 tournament in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. With two rounds remaining, the Buffs trail leader Southern California by 12 strokes. Individually, Yannik Paul (seventh place) and Coloradan Ross Macdonald (eighth) are in the top 10 for CU. … The University of Denver women, seeking their 15th consecutive conference championship, trail leader North Dakota State by 13 strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round of the Summit League Championship in Nebraska City. DU, currently in second place out of eight teams, is being led individually by Sophie Newlove, who holds third place at 146 and is three out of the lead. … The CU women are in fourth place with one round life in the Pac-12 Championship in Seattle. The Buffs trail leader UCLA by nine. Brittany Fan is leading the way for CU, standing in fifth place individually.
