It was a noteworthy day on Friday for Colorado teams and individuals at conference championship tournaments.
Three Colorado residents broke par at the men’s Mountain West Championship in Tucson, Ariz.
And the University of Northern Colorado women are just two strokes out of the lead and hold down third place after round 1 of the Big Sky Championship in Boulder City, Nev.
Tanner Jenson (pictured) of Parker, a senior at Utah State, shot a 3-under-par 69 and shares fourth place — three behind leader John Oda of UNLV — after round 1 in Tucson. And Jake Staiano of Cherry Hills Village and Colorado State teammate AJ Ott of Fort Collins managed 1-under 71s, good for a share of 12th place.
Staiano and Ott were joined under par by teammate Blake Cannon (70, eighth place) and Colton Yates (71) as CSU holds down fourth place in the 11-team field. The Rams fired a 5-under-par 283 as a team and trail leader San Diego State by four.
The Air Force Academy (296) shares eighth place.
Meanwhile, at the women’s Big Sky meet, UNC is very much in the hunt as a 23-over-par 311 leaves the Bears just two back of leader Portland State. Junior Christina Ferreira leads the way individually for UNC, shooting a 74, good for third place, two strokes behind leader Sofia Anokhina of Northern Arizona.
