University of Northern Colorado senior Steven Kupcho, competing in perhaps his final college tournament, started out with a bang.
The 2012 CGA Player of the Year made an eagle and five birdies Friday to shoot a 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the Big Sky Conference Championship in Boulder City, Nev. The score left him tied for second place in the 54-hole event, two strokes behind leader Taylor Knoll of Sacramento State. As a team, Northern Colorado sits in third place at 3 under par, 10 back of leader Sacramento State.
Meanwhile, also in the top three individually at a conference meet is University of Colorado junior Jeremy Paul, who shares third place at the Pac-12 tournament in Salt Lake City.
Paul posted rounds of 67-68 for a 7-under-par 135 total at the halfway point at The Country Club. The German made an eagle and nine birdies in his two rounds on Friday.
Paul trails leader K.K. Limbhasut by three strokes with two rounds remaining.
In the team competition, CU is tied for sixth place, going 360-363 for a 13-over-par 723 total. Stanford leads the way at 688.
