Four players who have won individual CGA championships occupy the top four spots after Saturday’s second round of the CGA Mid-Amateur at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.
Defending champion Jon Lindstrom (pictured) of Lakewood Country Club kept the lead with a 2-under-par 70 that left him at 3-under 141 overall heading into Sunday’s final round.
Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club, the 2014 Mid-Am champ, trails by one after tying for the best round of the tournament, a 4-under-par 68. Also firing 68 on Saturday was 2015 CGA Match Play winner Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course, who shares third place at 145 with Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club. Irwin, a two-time Mid-Am champ, carded a 70 on Saturday.
Lindstrom and Irwin are each attempting to become just the third player to win at least three CGA Mid-Amateur Championships.
Lindstrom, who along with Nosewicz and Keith Humerickhouse will represent Colorado in next week’s USGA Men’s State Team Championship, made three birdies and one bogey on Saturday.
Thayer, meanwhile, racked up seven birdies in round 2, along with three bogeys. Nosewicz and Irwin each made five birdies on Saturday, with Irwin playing his final 12 holes in 5 under par.
The field was cut from 84 to the top 40 players and ties after 36 holes, with the 43 golfers who stand at 157 or better advancing to Sunday.
Lindstrom, Thayer and Nosewicz will tee off for the final round at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday.
The Mid-Amateur is limited to players 25 and older.
