Denver resident Chris Thayer saw his run end at his first U.S. Mid-Amateur on Monday, but former University of Colorado golfer Kenny Coakley advanced to the match play round of 32 at Stonewall in Elverson, Pa.
Thayer, the 2014 CGA Mid-Amateur champion, lost 2 and 1 in a round-of-64 match against Claudio Consul of Germany.
Thayer, who never led in the match, battled back from being 2 down to evening things after nine holes following a par-birdie-par stretch. But Consul went up for good with a 10th-hole par, and also won the 15th hole with a par.
Meanwhile, Coakley cruised to a 5 and 4 victory Monday over Matt Cohn of San Francisco. Coakley, the 2001 CGA Match Play runner-up who played for CU from 2003-06, never trailed in the match, making three birdies through 14 holes.
In Tuesday’s round of 32, Coakley will face co-medalist Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C.
