Two players who will compete in the U.S. Amateur later this month, Kyler Dunkle of the Club at Pradera and Colin Prater of The Broadmoor Golf Club, joined Josh Seiple of Castle Pines Golf Club and Spencer Painton of Green Valley Ranch Golf Club atop the leaderboard after Thurday’s opening round of the CGA Amateur Championship presented by Webster Investment Advisors.
The four co-leaders shot 1-under-par 69s at Boulder Country Club in the tournament that was previously known as the CGA Stroke Play.
In a tightly-packed leaderboard, 36 golfers scored between 69 and 74 on Thursday.
Dunkle (pictured), the former 5A state high school champion who recently transferred from Colorado State to Utah, made four birdies and three bogeys in the opening round of the 72-hole event. Seiple, runner-up in the 2016 CGA Match Play, also recorded four birdies. Painton, the former 5A state champ who has transferred to the University of Colorado from Kansas, and Prater, who plays for CU-Colorado Springs, made five birdies each.
Three players opened with even-par 70s and share fifth place, a stroke back of the leaders: 2016 CGA Match Play winner Nathaniel Goddard of Ptarmigan Country Club, former CGA Mid-Amateur champion Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club, and Cole Cunningham of Valley Country Club.
Defending champion Chris Korte of Lone Tree Golf Club, a University of Denver golfer, carded a first-round 73.
The field of 83 will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after Friday’s second round.
The CGA Amateur is being held at Boulder Country Club for the sixth time since 1978.
