Going Low

Tom Whitney of Fort Collins made it back-to-back victories in the Waterloo (Iowa) Open on Sunday, and he did it in spectacular fashion.

The former Air Force Academy golfer shot a 12-under-par 60 — his personal best in a tournament — in Sunday’s final round to post a 23-under 193 total and win by three.

At the Irv Warren Golf Course on Sunday, Whitney made two eagles — one on a par-4 and one on a par-5 — to go with eight birdies on the 6,194-yard layout. He finished one off the course record.

For the week, Whitney went 66-67-60 and earned $55,000. He finished three ahead of Eric Cole and Seth Fair.

Whitney became the eighth back-to-back winner of the Waterloo Open, which was first played in 1934.

Whitney competed on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica much of the first half of the year. After five top-20 finishes on that circuit, he ranks 21st on the 2016 money list.
