First-round leader Braden Bentley of Colorado Springs and Daniel Pearson of Longmont share the top spot in the Colorado Junior Amateur boys tournament, while 2015 CWGA Junior Stroke Play champion Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch opened up a five-shot lead in the girls championship Tuesday at Eisenhower Golf Club’s Blue Course.
The titles in both tournaments will be settled in Wednesday’s final round of the first “major” of the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado.
Bentley, a top-10 finisher at the 4A state high school tornament last fall, and Pearson, who placed fourth in the 2015 CGA Junior Stroke Play, are the only two players under par in the boys championship, both standing at 1-under 143.
Bentley, who has signed to play college golf at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., beginning this fall, shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Pearson, a senior-to-be at Fairview High School in Boulder who has verbally committed to the University of Nebraka, carded a Tuesday-best 71 which included five birdies.
Three back of the leaders, in a tie for third place going into Wednesday, are Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction (74 Tuesday) and Timothy Amundson of Littleton (73 in round 2). Coby Welch of Highlands Ranch, the 2015 CGA Junior Player of the Year, and Dillon Stewart of Fort Collins share fifth place at 147.
At the girls championship, Weinstein, who won the 5A state high school title last month, gave herself a cushion on Tuesday. Her 1-over-par 73, which featured 17 pars and a bogey on the 17th hole — put the Regis University signee at 4-over-par 148 heading into the final round.
Weinstein, the 2015 CWGA Junior Player of the Year, is five ahead of second-place Hailey Schalk of Erie. The 14-year-old Schalk made two birdies en route to a 75 and a 153 total.
No one else in the girls competition is under 160 as Sarah Hwang of Monument is at that figure after carding a 79, putting her in third place.
The leaders in the boys competition will tee off Wednesday at 9:36 a.m., while the girls will start at 9:48.
