Two golfers with strong Colorado ties were among the 45 female athletes and contributors honored Sunday by the Sportswomen of Colorado at its 42nd annual award celebration at the Marriott Denver Tech Center.
Jennifer Kupcho (pictured) of Westminster received a Sportswomen award for golf for the second consecutive year. And joining her as a golf honoree this time was University of Colorado golfer Esther Lee.
Kupcho was the CWGA Player of the Year in both 2014 and ’15. She currently sits 92nd in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings. Now a freshman at Wake Forest after graduating last spring from Jefferson Academy, Kupcho won the 2015 CWGA Stroke Play by an amazing 21 shots after posting a 16-under-par 200 total for three rounds.
Also last year, Kupcho won her second 4A girls state high school title and advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur, where she lost to eventual champion Hannah O’Sullivan. In addition, she placed third in the Big “I” National Championship.
In her freshman season at Wake Forest, Kupcho has notched three top-10 individual finishes so far.
As for Lee, she’s ranked among the top 20 women’s college golfers in the nation by both Golfweek and Golfstat and is 50th in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings. The CU junior has an individual victory and three other top 10s so far this season. Last season, after transferring from Duke, Lee earned second-team All-American honors. Between her sophomore and junior seasons at CU, she qualified in Colorado for the U.S. Women’s Amateur.
