Colorado State University golfer Zahkai Brown shot a 5-under-par 66 and 21 other players broke par Thursday in the first round of the 75th annual CGA Stroke Play Championship.
Brown (pictured), who earlier this month qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the second time, made six birdies and one bogey to take a one-stroke lead at CommonGround Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the CGA and the CWGA.
Wyndham Clark of Cherry Hills Country Club, who won the 2010 CGA Stroke Play at age 16, is one of six players tied for second place. The Valor Christian senior-to-be was 5 under par through 11 holes before dropping a stroke down the stretch.
Also at 67 are former professionals Alex Buecking and Danny Riskam, both of Columbine Country Club, along with University of Colorado golfer Derek Fribbs, Steve Connell of Riverdale Golf Courses and Brandon Bingaman of Black Canyon Golf Club.
Fribbs, who was 6 under par through 11, shot 67 despite back-to-back double bogeys on the second nine. Bingaman was also 6 under through 11, thanks in part to an eagle on No. 11.
The 84-man field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after 36 holes. The 72-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday.
