Moore and Austin Notch Another Mashie Victory

Janet Moore and Christie Austin, both of Cherry Hills CC, defeated the defending champions Kim Eaton of Riverdale GC and Melissa Martin of Bookcliff CC, 3 and 1, to claim their sixth CWGA Mashie Championship title together since 1996. (Moore also won an additional title with her daughter Sarah in 2009.)  This was the first year that the Mashie Championship was held at two different locations; The CC at Castle Pines and Canongate at Blackstone CC. Overcoming the challenges of competing at two courses did not affect Moore and Austin from earning the victory, who came into the tournament as the number two seed. The championship match was a back and forth battle.

Eaton and Martin started the round by taking a quick 1 up lead, scoring a birdie on hole one. Moore and Austin answered with a birdie of their own on the third hole to bring the match back to all square. Another birdie on hole five gave the duo from Cherry Hills CC a 1 up lead, and they also won the seventh hole to go 2 up. Eaton and Martin won hole number eight and birdied hole 11 to bring the match back to all square. The match remained all square until Moore and Austin produced a birdie on hole 14, claimed hole 15, and birdied hole 17 to clinch the title.

On the road to the final match, Moore and Austin beat Robyn Asbury and Danielle Atkinson, both of The Pinery CC, going 19 holes in the quarterfinals while Eaton and Martin defeated Helen Graham of Colorado GC and Lynn Zmistowski of The CC at Castle Pines with a 7 and 5 result. In the semifinal round, Moore and Austin won 3 and 2 over Jill Gaschler of Willis Case GC and Stacey Arnold of Broken Tee GC. Eaton and Martin went on to score a victory against Cindy Pallatino of CommonGround GC and Kathy Malpass of Hiwan GC 6 and 5 to advance to the final.
