Steve Irwin Shares 2nd at Trans-Miss

Dodge Kemmer of Palo Alto, Calif., shot a 5-under-par 65 to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of the 107th Trans-Mississippi Championship at Denver Country Club.

The former Stanford golfer is three ahead of Steve Irwin of Golden, Amory Davis of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Joshua Manske of Algona, Iowa.

Sixteeen players broke par in the first round, including four Coloradans: Irwin, Gunner Wiebe of Aurora (69), Brian Dorfman of Greenwood Village (69) and Kory Harrell of Colorado Springs (69). Also among those at 69 is Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., the No. 20-ranked amateur in the world.

In the senior division for players 55 and older, Robert Polk of Parker shares second place after shooting an even-par 70 on Tuesday. Chip Lutz of Reading, Pa., fired a 1-under-par 69 to grab the lead, while Tom Phillips of Scottsdale, Ariz. joined Polk at 70.

The 54-hole Trans-Miss will continue through Thursday.
