Somin Lee of Heather Ridge CC played an impressive three rounds of golf at Lone Tree GC to win her very first CWGA 2009 Junior Stroke Play Championship, adding to her Junior Match Play title she collected in 2008. Lee scored a 74-78-74, shooting an overall score of 226 which was good enough to defeat Loren Forney of Bookcliff CC by six strokes. Forney was the only other player to score in the 70s all three days of the Championship. Lee’s final round found her hitting approach shots close and making key putts for birdies and pars. She was two-under after the front nine where she carded three birdies. She cooled a bit on the back nine, but Somin already had enough ground on the field to easily capture the title.
After the first round, Somin Lee found herself in third behind Kristin Kempton of Lone Tree who shot a one-under-par round of 71 on her home course and Olivia Garard of Broken Tee Englewood who shot a 72. Lee made a comeback, shooting a best-of-field 78 on the second day to move herself in the lead going into the final round. Garard was on Lee’s heels after round two as she held onto her second place position at one stroke back. On the final day, Loren Forney moved into second to finish with an overall score of 236, while Olivia Garard of Broken Tee Englewood dropped to third with a three-day total of 237.
