The Moores Win a Special Mashie Title

Janet and Sarah Moore of Cherry Hills CC claimed the 2009 CWGA Mashie Championship, the first time in CWGA history that a mother-daughter duo has done so. The Moores defeated Kim Eaton of Riverdale GC and Cindy Pallatino of CommonGround GC, 19 holes. The entire championship match was extremely competitive as neither side was ever up by more than 1 hole. Janet summed it up afterward saying, “Everyone fought hard and no one gave anything away. It was one of the toughest matches I’ve ever been a part of.” Eaton and Pallatino started off strong as they were 1 up for the first three holes, but the match stood at all square for most the rest of the front nine. Sarah Moore continued her strong play during the match (recently shot a personal best 70 at the 2009 5A girls’ golf state championship) and came through on a couple of key holes. It was on the back nine where she let her skills shine. Eaton and Pallatino bogeyed number 10 and the Moores went 1 up. It was at the 18th hole that Eaton and Pallatino birdied to force extra holes while the Moores bogeyed. The teams headed back to the first hole for a playoff. There, Janet hit her second shot onto the green and two-putted for birdie for the win. For Eaton and Pallatino, it was a bittersweet day. While both players played a great round, this was the team’s seventh year making it to the final match and coming up short of being named champions.

In the quarterfinals, number one seed Eaton and Pallatino defeated Marianne Ceriani of Rolling Hills CC and Beverly Hoffenberg of Pinehurst CC, 4 and 3. Eaton and Pallatino went on to defeat 2007 Mashie champions Stefanie Ferguson of Broadlands GC and Kim Gosche from Broken Tee Englewood GC in the semifinals when the pair was forced to concede the match due to Ferguson’s ankle injury. The number two-seeded Moores defeated Barbara Hoverston from Meridian GC and Lynn Larson of The Pinery CC in the quarterfinals, 2 and 1. Janet faced former Mashie teammate Christie Austin of Cherry Hills CC and Barbara Byrnes (AZ) in the semifinal round, and she and Sarah claimed that match, 2 and 1.

For Janet, this is her sixth Mashie Championship win dating back to 1996, five of which are with Austin. It is her 18th overall CWGA Championship title.
