Former Texas Wesleyan University player Ryan Stephens of Lakewood CC shot 67 in the final round for an astonishing 18-under par 270 to complete one of the more impressive performances in the 71-year history of the CGA Stroke Play Championship. Stephens’ mastery of the difficult Murphy Creek Golf Course, which is scheduled to host the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links, included 23 birdies and two eagles in four sub-par rounds (70-64-69-67) en route to a five-stroke victory. For Stephens, who grew up playing in the Colorado Junior Golf Association, this was his first tournament victory. His name will join the likes of Hale Irwin, Steve Jones and Brandt Jobe as past champions etched on the coveted N.C. “Tub” Morris Trophy.
University of San Diego player Darrin Hall of Lakewood CC, who led after the first two rounds, shot 71 in final round to finish in second place at 275 (-13). 2004 champion Drew Stoltz of Fort Collins CC shot his second consecutive 69 to finish in third place at 277 (-11). Fourth place was captured by Dan Kleckner of Pinehurst CC at 279 (-9). Three players finished tied for 5th at 280 (-8) including University of New Mexico player Jacob Lestishen of Lone Tree GC, CU player Jim Grady of Omni Interlocken, and former DU player Charles Soule of Ute Creek GC.
