Scott Mendelsohn of South Suburban Family SC shot a two-under 70 in the final round for a 217 (one over par) total to win the CGA Mid-Amateur Championship at The Country Club at Castle Pines. Medelsohn began the day three strokes behind defending champion Steve Irwin of Lakewood CC, who shot 76 in the final round to finish second at 220. Irwin held his three-stroke lead over Mendelsohn through the first 11 holes. Mendelsohn was able to pull within one when he nearly holed his tee shot on the par-3 14th, and made an easy birdie. The lead changed hands on the par-5 16th when Irwin made bogey from a greenside bunker, and Medelsohn converted his birdie attempt. Mendelsohn made pars on 17 and 18 to secure the victory, his first CGA individual title since he regained his amateur status two years ago, and second overall. Prior to turning pro, Mendelsohn had won the CGA Stroke Play Championship in 1997.
Michael Harrington of Kissing Camels Club shot 74 for a 222 total to finish third. This finish came on the heels of his strong performance at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship last week, in which he made the round of 16 where he lost to seven-time champion Rick DeWitt of West Woods GC. Jim Doidge of Pueblo CC finished in a tie for fourth place at 224 with current CGA Senior Stroke Play champion Steve Murphy of The Canterberry Club. 1995 champion Kent Moore of Cherry Hills CC finished sixth at 225. Four players including DeWitt finished tied for seventh at 227.
