Kelly Crone of Deer Creek at Meadow Ranch Golf Club stayed more consistent than the weather and the field through three days at the challenging Plum Creek Golf & Country Club to win the CGA State Senior Stroke Play Championship. Crone finished with a final round 74 for a 220 total to earn his first CGA state title. Crone entered the final round tied with Jeff Wagner of Fox Hollow Golf Course and David Maurstad of Murphy Creek Golf Course. Wagner carded a final round 78 to slip into third place at 224, two strokes behind Ed Doerffel of Patty Jewett Golf Course whose final round 75 pushed him into second place at 222. Former CGA Senior Match Play champion Roger Gunderson of Heritage Eagle Bend finished with a 78 to secure fourth place at 226. Steve Bell of Denver Country Club and Chuck Fisher of Legacy Ridge Golf Course tied for fifth at 227. Crone’s home club Deer Creek at Meadow Ranch will house the Warren Simmons Trophy awarded to the CGA state Senior Stroke Play champion until next year’s event.
