The Colorado Section PGA professionals arrived at Bear Creek Golf Club with revenge on their minds as they took on the CGA amateurs in the 31st Descente Colorado Cup Matches. The amateurs won both the Open Division and Senior Division Colorado Cups in 2000, and fully intended to retain those trophies for 2001. The professionals and the amateurs each fielded a team of twelve players in both the Open Division and the Senior Division. In this “Battle at Bear Creek,” the Open Division amateur team took an early 4-2 lead over the professionals in the four-ball matches. In the singles matches, amateurs Kevin Stadler of Bear Creek Golf Club and Ben Portie of Hyland Hills won the last two matches of the day to seal the Open Division victory for the amateurs at 7/12 – 4 1/2. The Descente Colorado Cup will remain at the CGA offices until 2002. The win brings the Open Division total to 21-8-2 in favor of the professionals.
In the Senior Division, the amateurs took a 3 1/2 – 2 1/2 lead in the four-ball matches, which held up as they split the singles matches 6 – 6. The amateurs won the day 9 1/2 – 8 1/2 and will retain possession of the senior Colorado Cup. The amateurs now lead the professionals 10-7-2 over the 19 years that the Senior Division has been a part of the Colorado Cup Matches.
