Green Valley Ranch Golf Course was set up the longest it has been for the final round of the CGA State Boys’ Stroke Play Championship. For Luke Antonelli of Rifle Creek Golf Club, longer must mean easier. Antonelli fired a five-under par 67 in the final round, the only round of the day under 70 and tying the course record, to win the championship at 210 (six under par). Antonelli, who won the 2001 CGA western Chapter Boys’ Championship, said afterward “It feels great to be the state champion.” He will be attending St. Mary’s in San Antonio in the fall as a member of the golf team.
Down the stretch, Antonelli was tied with 2001 CGA Junior Boys’ Player of the Year Kenny Coakley of Bear Creek Golf Club. Antonelli moved one stroke ahead of Coakley with a birdie on 14, and held that lead to the 18th tee. Coakley’s second shot on the 640-yard par five 18th found the hazard, and Antonelli hit the flag stick on his third shot and the ball settled eight feet from the hole. Antonelli’s two-putt for par earned him a two-stroke victory and the title of state champion. Coakley finished second at 212.The leader going into the final round, Current 5A State High School champion Drew Stoltz of Fort Collins Country Club, struggled all day carding a 79 and finishing fourth at even par 216. Chris Garehime of Columbine Country Club fired a 70 to climb into third place at 213.
