Tom Glissmeyer of Country Club of Colorado stayed tough down the stretch to beat Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch Golf Club 1 up to win his first CGA Boys’ State Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club. Tolan, a junior at ThunderRidge High School coming off of his first U.S. Open appearance at the age of 16, finished as runner-up in this event for the second time in his young career. Glissmeyer’s career, however, is even younger as he is just 15 and a sophomore at Cheyenne Mountain High School. The match was close throughout, and both players arrived to the 16th tee all square. Glissmeyer went one up when Tolan’s tee shot found the hazard. On the par-three 17th, Glissmeyer’s tee shot found the back green-side bunker, but he was able to get up and down for par to halve the hole and take his 1 up lead into 18. Again, Glissmeyer found himelf in a green-side bunker, and he again got up and down to save par and win the match 1 up. Both Glissmeyer and Tolan will be playing in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship to be held July 23-27at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Duluth, Georgia.
In the First Flight, Dan Hahn of Englewood Golf Course defeated Nick Nosewicz of Pinery Country Club in the final match to take the title. The final match in the Second Flight required a playoff to determine a champion. Steve Greene of Heritage at Westmoor birdied the first playoff hole to defeat Todd Natikoski of Eisenhower Golf Club and take the title.
