Marty Jertson of Gleneagle Golf Club is a senior at the Colorado School of Mines who had two goals coming into this summer – play in a USGA championship and win a CGA State Amateur championship. Earlier in the year, Jertson met one of his goals when he qualified for and played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. Sunday, Jertson met the other goal by firing a 70 in the final round of the CGA State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Saddle Rock Golf Course to finish at 282 (6-under par) and earn a four-stroke victory. “I still can’t believe I’m the state amateur champion…It hasn’t sunk in yet,” said a tired but excited Jertson. He was quick to identify what element of his game won it for him – “Definitely my putter.” The four stroke margin of victory is deceiving, as the race to the finish was very tight until the difficult final four holes when Jertson distanced himself from the field with pars and a strong birdie on 17. Jertson’s home club of Gleneagle Golf Club will display the Tub Morris Trophy awarded to the CGA State Stroke Play champion.
Brandon White of Greeley Country Club earned the CGA silver medal with his second place finish at 286 (2-under par). White shot 71 in the final round, as did Trey Treadwell of Eisenhower Golf Club, who took third at 287. Jertson, White and Treadwell were the only three players to finish under par for the tournament, which is a testament to the challenge that Saddle Rock Golf Course offers as a championship course. Jon Lindstrom of Saddle Rock Golf Course, Rick DeWitt of West Woods Golf Club, and Dean Clapp of Meadow Hills Golf Course all tied for fourth at even par 288.
