The prestigious Broadlands Golf Course was the site of one of the most dramatic finishes in CGA State Senior Match Play history. 2000 CGA Senior Player of the Year, John Olive of the Broadmoor Golf Club (pictured) provided the last moment of drama in the final match against Jerry Kidney of Overland Park Golf Course that featured dramatic shots throughout. Olive chipped in on the par-5 15th for eagle to go 2 up in the match, and after halving 16 found himself dormie (2 up with two hole to play) going into 17. The resilient Kidney won the 17th hole to set up the dramatic finish on 18 with Olive only 1 up. Kidney’s drive on the par-4 18th nestled perfectly in the center of the fairway. Olive then crushed a drive through the fairway and into the water. When Kidney’s approach shot found the green about 25 feet below the hole, a playoff seemed imminent as Olive’s approach shot (his third shot with the incurred penalty stroke) landed near the back of the green 30 feet from the hole. As Olive’s putt snaked it’s was toward the hole, he began to follow it pumping his fist in Tiger Woods fashion when it found the hole to save a remarkable par. All of a sudden, Kidney had to make his birdie putt to stay in the match despite Olive’s drive finding the water. When Kidney’s putt settled just short of the hole, Olive became the 2001 CGA State Senior Match Play Champion.
Earlier in the day, Olive defeated Mike Christie of Saddle Rock Golf Course 1 up in a very close semifinal match. Not as close, however, as the other semifinal match in which Kidney had to go to a playoff hole to defeat current CGA State Senior Stroke Play champion Charlie Post of Plum Creek Golf & Country Club.
In the Super Senior Division, Sam Battaglia of Bear Creek Golf Club won the title in convincing fashion – a 7 and 5 victory over defending Super Senior Division champion Don Baughman of Tiara Rado Golf Course.
