Call Wins Second CGA Stroke Play Title on Last Hole

August 17-20, 2000, Buffalo Run Golf Course

by Colorado Golf Association - 8/20/2000

When the dust settled at the end of the CGA State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Buffalo Run Golf Course, fittingly it was a Buffalo that remained standing. University of Colorado Buffalo Matt Call of Omni Interlocken (pictured) went into the final hole, the par-5 18th, tied for the lead at 2-under with six other players. One of those players, current CGA Match Play champ Todd Vernon of Meridian Golf Club, was in Call's final group. Call's drive found the fairway, but Vernon's drive found the right rough. Vernon's second shot went left and found the hazard, and he would bogie the hole. Call's second shot, with a four-iron, landed hole-high on the right collar of the green. He chipped up to within seven feet of the hole, and faced that birdie putt to avoid a five-way playoff and win the championship outright. With the same confident stroke that had gotten him to this point over the last 71 holes, Call sank the putt for a final round 70 and a 285 total to win by one-stroke. Call won this prestigious event in 1998 with a birdie on the first playoff hole against last year's champion Rick DeWitt of West Woods Golf Club. In 2000 he did it again with a birdie, but this time to avoid a playoff with DeWitt who tied for second at 286.

Also tied for second were; Erik Billinger of Sunset Golf Course, who got there with a final round 68, Tommy Hart of Los Verdes Golf Club, and Robert Stephenson of Collindale Golf Course. Joining Vernon at 287 and tied for third were Nick Davey and Matt Genovese of Boulder Country Club. 1977 champion, John Olive of Broadmoor Golf Club, was in contention until he faltered on the final two holes (played them 3-over) and finished at even-par 288.
